The Moment Seizes Us: Study abroad in Turku, Finland

May - Celebration and goodbye

Undeniably, the biggest of May is Vappu, the celebration for the first day of May in Finland. My friends and I joined the crowd in the street and along the riverside. It was the day that felt like everyone in Turku was there, and everything is happening at the same time. As we walked around, we saw that the sparkling cherry blossoms next to the city library. I suddenly recalled the first day we walked past the library with our tutor, and she told us that the cherry blossoms are one of the most beautiful things in the city. It felt like yesterday, but it was five months ago.

My goodbye at school and with my friends were both emotional and teary. I received the most meaningful Thank You card from the students on my last day, along with a lot of hugs. My friends and I had dinner and took a walk along the river just as usual. We went to different bus stops after the longest group hug in front of the church of Turku.

The Vappu festival was like an emotional goodbye to the city. The goodbyes with students and my friends were like a ceremony to celebrate our time together. A part of me is forever in Turku, and now I take Turku with me every step of the way.

I could not ask for a better last day in Finland.
